Opening of the special exhibition "Storm and Retribution"

500 Years of the Peasants' War
1525/26 – 2025/26
Eröffnung Sonderausstellung Bauernkrieg

On May 20, 2026, the new special exhibition “Storm and Retribution!” was officially opened. It is dedicated to commemorating the Peasants’ Wars, which came to an end in the Pinzgau region in 1526, and also sheds light on the situation in Kaprun. Opening remarks were delivered by VSF Chairman and Managing Director Hans Jäger, Mayor Domenik David, and State Representative Hannes Schernthaner on behalf of the State of Salzburg. Following a thematic introduction by Museum Director Manuel Scherer-Windisch, visitors were able to explore the exhibition. It offers a glimpse into the social and economic history during the Peasants’ Wars and attempts to shed light on the concerns and hardships of the subjects of Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg. Cellist Julia Klaushofer provided the musical accompaniment with pieces that reflect the gravity of the subject matter.

Interactive Highlight
A highlight of the exhibition is the AI avatar “M@ria,” who can answer questions about the Peasants’ War in real time. At the same time, guests are invited to express their own views on the topic of artificial intelligence – an important step toward a critical engagement with this technology.

The exhibition is part of the Salzburg regional project on the Peasants’ Wars of 1525–1526. Additional exhibitions on this topic are on display at Ritzen Castle in Saalfelden and at the Vogtturm Museum in Zell am See.
